From black love to jollof rice and revolutionary films to carnivals, I’ve attended some pretty cool events in the DMV (Washington D.C. area) this year. One of my greatest takeaways has been connecting with people – those whom I met for the first time, others with whom I’ve reconnected after months sometimes even years. noticed that there is one question that numerous people keep asking me: “Why didn’t you invite me / tell me about so-and-so event?”
Because of this, I’ve decided to create #ChiSocial. This will be a continuous series where each month I’ll post about some of the hottest events in the DMV that you won’t want to miss! July is almost over, but there are still some cool events that I’ll be attending and/or heard about. So here we go…
1. Chop Bar DC – July 29 (2pm – 6pm)
Chop Bar is an event centered around tasty food, positive vibes, and good music. Created by Dine Diaspora, these pop-up food experiences feature chefs who prepare African delicacies, which attendees get to taste while also enjoying customized drinks and shaking body.
On the 29th, the featured chef, Hiyaw Gebreyohannes, co-owner and chef at GORSHA, will be dishing out some Eastern and Western African delicacies via a 5 – course tasting menu. There will also be a snack bar and curated drink menu (one drink free with admission!). Click here for more information.
2. YALI Summit – July 29 – August 2 (varying times)
The Mandela Washington fellowship also commonly referred to as the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) fellowship has an annual two-month outbound program in the United States. Launched by President Obama in 2014, the fellowship aims to harness the power of rising African leaders and connect them with industry leaders in the U.S.
The YALI summit is the official closing event for the 2018 fellows in Washington DC. Check out the website for the list of specific program events.
3. Wendy Williams Season 10 Tour – July 31 (6:30pm – 10pm)
Wendy Williams is currently touringtthe U.S., and she’ll be in Silver Spring, Maryland for one nite.
There will be a DJ, a Selfie Station, and an on-site glam squad will be doing attendees hair, nails, or make-up! Irregardless of your personal opinion of WW and her show, this event will be one to remember. Not yet convinced? You can find the event details here.
Oh and did I mention that I’ll be at all three events?? Let me know which event(s) you’ll be attending, and don’t forget to share this post with a friend or two!
